Although it’s no surprise, Sweden, has continued to develop as a leader in innovation in Europe. At the top of the list is their belief that employees should be allowed to take up to 6 months off from their jobs to pursue a new company idea or care for a relative amongst other things. This promise allows for individuals to not only take the time they need but also return safely to their jobs with the guarantee that they will be there when they return.

Our American mindset is to worry that after long periods of absence we may no longer be needed or welcomed back to the job. This challenge stifles, rather than creates opportunities for the American family. Should we take a page out of the Swedish book? Thinking about having the flexibility to have this time off, fosters the innovative thinking that can lead to small business breakthroughs and the pursuit of personal passions. On the opposite end, it encourages families to care for their loved ones without guilt and give them the strength in knowing they are supported.

If you were able to take this type of leave would you? Would you be more likely to work for a company that had these types of benefits?
